I have a dilemma...I am old school and have never used this as a dip.(This is Our first foal in 7 years)

Doing the right thing..I called the vet. Spoke to the first vet. He says he will leave me a bottle and dilution directions.
Two days later I call to make sure it is ready before I drive to BFE to pick it up. It is not. Vet #2 says she will go ahead and dilute it for me and to pick it up when I can. I go to the office...No Nolvasan made up for me and no vets there.

A tech should be full capable of handling this right....wrong.

I ask the tech for a small bottle of Nolvasan diluted with sterile saline and 2 unopened 6cc syringes.(They are sterile and the container is great for filling up and dipping the navel in.) She returned with full strength Nolvasan and an opened 6cc syringe.

When I asked her for what I wanted again she told me that you use the Nolvasan full strength and squirt it on the navel? (The stuff was sold to me in a little squeeze bottle.) I literally had to explain to her what I was doing and she brought me back 1 unopened syringe. Aggravated...I thanked her was nice, paid and left...

Ok enough ranting...My question is shouldn't this stuff be diluted prior to use?

Also, if this is the case, should I tell the vet what happened?

Yes, dilute the solution. I would say minimum .5cc to 5.5cc of saline if you are using a 6cc syringe

at Auburn we dilute the solution in a dixie cup and dip the navel...squirt of solution, then diluted with water to full. which would be much more dilute than the above example...watch for irritation.

Like 1/3 to 2/3water.
All this new stuff....gee I feel so "Out of Date"
Thanks again.

I saw Vicki's post on this a few months ago, so I know it was there! Anyway I put in my way of doing it. I dilute the solution in a tiny 2 oz spray bottle. Then a few times a day for the first day or two I spray it on. Much easier than trying to hold a foal still to "dip" I guess the syringe would work the same way though. Nolvasan is MUCH less irritating than iodine or betadine solution. I've used it on the last four kids with great cord dry up and no irritation. Just make sure if you are buying it in the store or catalog that you buy the surgical scrub and not the stall cleaner, bottles look alike.

I guess I'll just post it again. lol

I never had a problem using 7% iodine (no burns or irritations) but when the recommendation changed to chlorhexidine, I started using it. I have gotten it from my vet (my vet in NJ was also a friend so she didn't rape me with her prices) but usually get it at Walmart. I've never diluted it & my vet never said I should.
